Trauma occurs when we face highly stressful, frightening, or distressing events that are hard to manage or beyond our control. It can result from a single incident or from ongoing situations that persist over time. Many people will encounter an event in their lives that might be deemed traumatic.
What is Trauma?
The term "trauma" originates from the Greek word for physical wound, but in the realm of psychology, it describes profound emotional distress triggered by overwhelming events. These experiences, whether a single incident or a series of distressing situations, disrupt our sense of safety and can lead to persistent feelings of fear and helplessness. Trauma can stem from a variety of events including childhood loss, accidents, violence, sexual assault, military combat, natural disasters, or sudden bereavement, among others.
Responses to trauma are deeply personal and varied. What may be traumatic for one person might not affect another in the same way. Common immediate reactions include shock, fear, anger, and difficulty concentrating. Longer term responses may look like anxiety, depression, disordered eating, sleep disturbances, suicidal ideation, nightmares, flashbacks and more. In children, trauma might manifest as behavioral changes or increased clinginess. Although trauma can significantly impact an individual's well-being, most people show resilience and gradually recover with the aid of effective coping strategies and robust social support.
Research indicates that while trauma can alter brain function and increase sensitivity to perceived threats, only a small percentage of those affected will develop long-term mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding trauma and accessing the right support are crucial steps towards healing and regaining a sense of stability and peace.
